Long before tariffs or the winding down of the catalog, Orvis lost its way. I live half way between the Reno Nevada and Roseville, California stores. Their total fishing inventory COMBINED was about that of the ACE hardware store in Truckee. The vast footprint of each of these stores was filled with furniture, soft goods and of course pet toys.
Frequently the fly fishing corner of the store was staffed by people who knew more about furniture than fly fishing. The Reno Flyshop, Truckee ACE, and Roseville's Flyfishing Specialties scooped up the knowledgable and excellent staff that made these stores flourish.
I feel terrible for the staff who lost their jobs, and the company that lost its way, but scape goating external factors is, in MHO simply a smoke screen to cover for poor decision making from the top.
