Hatch Magazine 2016 Fly Fishing Photo Contest

Window of Water

I work as a fly fishing guide in New Zealand, and this photo was taken on one of my favorite high-country rivers, a jewel-like tributary of Lake Wakatipu. There's a magic time in the high country every season--usually the first week in December-- when the waters clear of snow melt, warm and drop and trout start looking up for the first time in months. And this often coincides with the hatch of our green manuka beetles (Pyronta festiva) and our yellow-winged Kakahi Queen (Coloburiscus humeralis) mayflies. Both were out in abundance on this trip. The water is clear but deceptively deep, and a dry fly cast here often raises fish from the depths of the pool, which is a good nine or ten feet deep. "Cast right there," I told Jim, "and hold on." He did and immediately hooked up on the manuka beetle.
