Continuing the trend of new product announcements in advance of the IFTD/ICAST show in Orlando, Dr. Slick has unveiled their lineup of new tools and gadgets for the coming year. Included in their new product offerings are their Typhoon pliers, a pair of premium pliers that are targeted at fly and conventional anglers alike.

Dr. Slick's new Typhoon pliers are made of 6061-T6 aircraft quality anodized, salt-water resistant aluminum that is fully machined, not die cast. Also featured are non-slip rubber grips and a self-opening
spring. The Typhoon's cutters are HR (Rockwell Hardness) 70+, which Dr. Slick describes as "lethal on all monofilament, new age braid and synthetic lines plus coated wire up to 60-pound." The pliers' jaws offer a half smooth and half striated design.

The most interesting thing about the new Typhoon pliers may be their price point, which could draw the interest of fishermen that have been in the market for a pair of premium pliers but have been unwilling to cough up several hundred dollars for some of the Typhoon's competing models. At $60 MSRP, anglers which have been toting along heavy, rusty needle nose pliers that are quickly disposed of after saltwater does its work may look to Dr. Slick's new premium, saltwater-safe solution.

The Dr. Slick Typhoon pliers are 6.5 inches long and weigh in at 4.5 ounces.

Definitely worth a look, as I have been doing exactly as the article suggests -- carrying around a rusty pair of needle nose pliers from the dollar store, as I've been unwilling to cough up $250+ for Hatch and Abel's offerings.

$65 is totally doable. Especially with the extra cutters.

Let me start out by saying I have carried Dr. Slicks Pisces pliers for 6 years or so. I needed to have a leather sheath made due to the pos nylon one provided riding too high. I talked to a Dr. Slick rep about it, guess they didn't care. Other reviews stated it was too heavy...wimps!!! If you used it you'd forget it was there. I like it, best for the money. Now on to the Typhoon pliers. Same POS nylon sheath, got a nice leather one made....nuff said. Yes its made of aluminum vs stain resistent steel but the handles are spread wider....for smaller hands it can be challenging. Cutters no better than the Pisces. The nose of the jaws is shorter and blunter than the Pisces making it harder to grab the hook without damaging the fly. It is more colorfull and pretty looking....oh and lighter. If you are the type where fashoin and image over ride usefulness these are your pliers. If you are a real fly fisherman look elsewhere. If you have the Pisces pliers don't waste your money like I did.
