Sage 8000 Series Fly Reels

As we reported earlier, Sage has recently been introducing a bevy of new products, including four new series of fly rods. In addition to these already announced products, Sage is introducing two new series of reels that it is calling "technologically superior". With new features like innovative drag systems, increased line capacity and line pickup speed, these new reels seem to be aimed mainly at big game anglers, despite being offered in sizes that will appeal to trout anglers and the like.

The 8000 PRO series was designed by Sage to offer a substantially increased level of fish stopping power and drag control to anglers who depend on their drags (unlike trout anglers, count me among the guilty, who have fancy drags on their trout reels that are very, very rarely needed). The 8000 PRO series introduces a unique, new dual drag system that gives anglers the ability to fine tune the control of their drag. It's best to let Sage explain:

The primary drag knob adjusts in one revolution with 1-20 numbered settings, while the secondary drag knob fine-tunes drag resistance by 15 percent with each sequential adjustment as well as prevents over-spooling when pulling line to cast. With settings A through E, there are a total of 195 individual drag combinations with a maximum setting that has 40 percent more drag than the 6000 series.

This all sounds pretty fancy and pretty good (especially the over-spooling prevention). This level of sophistication won't come cheap, but big game anglers may find the price tag worth it. The 8000 PRO series will retail for $750-$850, depending on model. These reels are coming in two colors, dubbed "Storm" (black) and "Stealth" (gunmetal), sizes are 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12.

Though the new 4600 series will likely appeal to trout, steelhead and salmon, and saltwater anglers alike -- it's new features are also most relevant to those of us chasing bigger fish. The 4600 series highlights include a notably larger diameter spool and arbor for faster line retrieval and a powerful 3:1 drag ratio. The spool is concaved, like some of Sage's other reels, to offer increased line and backing capacity. The 4600 is light too. At as low as 4 1/2 ounces, it's one of the lightest reels in Sage's lineup. The 4600 series is coming in the same "Storm" and "Stealth" colors as the 8000 PRO series. Sizes 4 to 9. Price $375-450.
