Orvis Hydros

Orvis offering almost a 20% discount on their award winning Hydros rod series. The Hydros series is what Orvis calls the "second lightest fly rod in the world". While we're not 100% sure that's true, the Hydros is light. Made from the same exact blanks as Orvis' top of the line Helios rods, only slightly weighed down by heavier components (reel seat, guides, etc), the Helios reportedly offers amazing performance at a price that is significantly lower than the Helios rods. The Hydros was picked by Field & Stream magazine as one of 2010's "Best of the Best".

Just in case you’ve been stuck in a cave for the past six months and haven’t heard, the price of genetic hackle has gone through the roof. As you likely know, the fairer sex (and Steven Tyler) have taken to weaving our prized hackle into their hair as a fashion craze. If you're anything like I was, you're sitting on the sidelines pissing and moaning about how you either can't find the hackle you need or aren't willing to pay the going rates. If you are, wake up and get in the game, before it's too late.

OMG! Don't I look totally beautiful???

Eastern Rises is old news. It wasn't Felt Soul Media's first film. I can't say if it was their best (I haven't seen them all). In the months that followed its release at last year's Telluride Mountain Film Festival, in May, it was all the rage. But it was released over a year ago, so why talk about it now?

For one thing, that rage was well deserved. Eastern Rises is a trip-diary of sorts, detailing the excursion of a group of fly fisherman as they travel across Russia to chase trout on the Kamchatka peninsula. Not only does the film offer up an amazing view of what are inarguably the world's best trout fishing rivers, it is simply a great film. The cinematography is excellent, the characters are interesting and often quite funny, and Ben Knight's witty narration never gets old. Showing someone who doesn't understand fanatical fly fishing Eastern Rises is so much more effective than stumbling while trying to find the words to describe our shared obsession.

After their high end NRX series rods took 'Best in Show' honors at last year's ICAST 2010, the folks at GLoomis had a tough act to follow up going into this year's convention. Not to worry, as GLoomis has taken two BIS honors home this year. Both the Best Fly Rod and Best Fishing Rod categories were snatched up by new GLoomis offerings.

If you're planning a bonefish trip for this fall or winter, chances are you're not thinking about Puerto Rico. You're almost definitely not thinking of Culebra, a small island off the Puerto Rico's eastern coast. And why would you be? As Culebra fly fishing guide Chris Goldmark says, "Culebra should never be considered a major Bonefish destination by any stretch of the imagination." However, if you're looking to plan an out-of-the-ordinary bonefishing trip that offers up shots at perhaps the Caribbean's biggest bonefish, off the shores of an authentic island oozing with culture, at prices that are dwarfish in comparison to bonefish trips to the Florida Keys or islands of the Bahamas -- you might want to take a look at Culebra after all.

Allen Trout Series 5/7 Reel (Green)

When highlighting some of our favorite gear, the easy starting place is with Allen Fly Fishing's reels. We could have picked the Alpha series, or even one of Allen's older XL series, but for now we'll focus on the Trout series. After all, we spend most of our time fishing for trout. You might say that evaluating a reel by how it performs when fishing for trout isn't all that telling, since many trout don't even require you to get them on the reel to land them. Fair enough.
