Montrose, Colorado-based Scott Fly Rods announced last week that it is expanding two of its newest and most popular fly rods series. Three new rod models have been added to Scott’s moderate-action GT series and one new model has been added to its flagship two-handed Swing series. Though not used by Scott, the ubiquitous marketing buzzword “purpose-built” applies here, with each new model designed to fill a specific niche.

The GT series gets two new sub-8-foot models, one 4-weight and one 5-weight, the latter of which you don’t see many of — as Scott dutifully points out in its description of the rod. If the utility of a 5-weight shorter than 8 feet long seems dubious, Scott assures us that its new 7’10” model will put an “ear-to-ear grin on your face.”

The new 4-weight GT addition is also a 7’10” model, one Scott says is “oozing with feel and some real magic.”

If you’re an angler that spends a lot of time fishing on streams with tight cover or even just on small spring creeks and freestoners where a traditional 9-foot rod typically feels like overkill, Scott’s new sub-8 foot GT models are likely worth a hard look.

Rounding out the GT series addition is the new 8’10” 7-weight model — one we’re particularly excited to put through its paces. High quality, moderate-action streamer rods don’t exactly grow on trees, which is a shame, considering they are many experienced anglers’ preferred tools for fishing streamers, especially on floating or intermediate or even light sinking lines. Scott takes care to note that its new 7-weight GT also excels at tossing big dries (think big terrestrials and poppers), but it’s the rod’s streamer-fishing prowess we’re most excited to check out.

Though the wildly successful Swing series only gets one new model to the GT’s three, it’s a meaningful addition, one that expands the series firmly into the trout realm. Unlike the only other Swing model lighter than a 6 weight, the 11’8” 4-weight, the new 11' 4” 2-weight Swing is designed specifically for trout fishing. Scott calls its new Swing 2-weight “deep bending and oh so smooth” and if that holds, it will no doubt become a fast favorite for trout Spey aficionados.

Pricing for the new GT models are in line with the rest of their series at $1,195. The new Swing 2-weight will hit fly shop shelves at $1,395. Both are available immediately from Scott authorized dealers.
