Putting the fly fishing industry in the spotlight

Have you ever stood up in front of 800+ cheering fly fishers? Have you ever stood alone on the stage in front of a beer-lubricated crowd that’s been whipped into a frenzy by the great “Hank Patterson” and then blown away by some truly incredible fly fishing films?

Because that was my Saturday night. The legendary fly fishing town of Missoula, Montana was deep in the throws of an epic “Down The Hatch” tent revival, and the powers-that-be at Orvis handed me a microphone and sent me out on the stage of the Wilma theater with a mandate to talk about our new film CHROME.

Regular readers will naturally expect tenkara to be the topic of most of my contributions to this magazine. In this case, I will ask for your indulgence as I offer a tribute to a dear friend and colleague who died recently.

Most readers will not have heard of Alex Diekmann, and that is not a surprise. Alex did not seek the spotlight or recognition; he let his work speak for him. But if you fish in Montana, tenkara or otherwise, you have seen or benefited from his work.

I’ve been searching for the word, and the word is “guilt.” That’s what I felt — guilt.

I felt guilty because I enjoyed the climate change-fueled El Nino that produced 70-degree days through most of December. In years past I would have cursed the warm temps while sitting in the deer woods. But this year I’ve got a fly rod.
